The American Poker Awards 2nd Edition Winners
The SLS Hotel in Los Angeles played host to the 2nd edition of American Poker Awards hosted by the Global Poker Index.
In attendance at the event were the most influential figures from across poker: business, media and players alike.
Hosted by Kara Scott, the first awards of the night, which had been predetermined by the GPI formula on the basis of performances in 2015 were the GPI and GPI Female Player of the Year awards. These awards went to Byron Kaverman and Kelly Minkin respectively.
The Breakout Player of the Year award went to Joshua Beckley, whose appearance in the November Nine proved to be the pinnacle of an impressive 2015 which included 5 WSOP cashes. With 22,374 entries, it was perhaps no surprise that the WSOP Colossus picked up the award for Best Tournament Under $2,000. Anthony Zinno took down the award for Best Tournament Performance, for his victory in the 2015 LAPC where he defeated 537 of the game’s best for $1,015,860.
The Media Person of the Year award went to Donnie Peters in what appeared a popular choice around the room. The Poker Innovation of the Year saw another victory for WSOP, with the online/live hybrid bracelet event scooping the award. The Media Content of the Year Award went to Joe Giron, for his now iconic Photo of Negreanu crumbled on the floor after his main event elimination.
The Poker Presenter of the Year award went to none other than Kara Scott, arguably the most popular award of the night. Matt Stout, who earlier in the day had appeared on the player’s panel during the American Poker Conference, picked up the award for Charitable Initiative of the Year with his Charity Series of Poker initiative. The Industry Person of the Year award went to tournament director, TDA Founder, and WPT Executive Director Matt Savage.
Mike Sexton awarded with Lifetime Achievement American Poker Award
The Moment of the Year Award, perhaps scant consolation and the second award pertaining to this moment was awarded to Daniel Negreanu for the tragic 11th place bustout at the 2016 WSOP Main Event. Mike Sexton and Kevin ‘Kevmath’ Mathers also picked up American Poker Awards for the Jury Prize and for the Lifetime Achievement award respectively.
